The Westmore family

    The Westmore family was a famous family who had a great impact on the art of make-up. They were six brothers and all of them had followed the same path that is the " Make-up artistry".
    Their father, George Westmore (1879-1931) who was born in Great Britain, after surviving in the South African war and after his mariag, he opened his first hairdressing salon. Then he moved to the USA, still working as a hairdresser in many different cities and then being attracted by Los Angeles, he moved there in 1917. There he established the first studio make-up department in history. After a few months he moved to Triangle Studios overseing the make-up for various stars. His life ends in a tragic suicide due to several disappointments he face during his life.
 
    His life inspired his six sons ,so they all became heads or assistant heads of make-up departments of major studios.

    Montague George Westmore (1902-1940), known as "Mont", started his career as a free-lance and then joined the studios of David O. Selznick in the role of supervisor of make-up during the screen tests and also for the filming of "Gone with the wind".
      Percival Harry Westmore (1904-1970) who is known as "Perc", was the head of the make-up department of First National Pictures and then Warner Brothers- which is the company that took in the First National Pictures. After 27 years he worked for that company he joined Universal Studios. During his life he was also the chief administrator of a salon named The House of Westmore where the whole family was involved financially.
    Ernest Henry Westmore (1904- 1968), known  as " Ern", Perc's twin brother, was working at First National and after that he became the head of make-up at RKO. When he was working there he won an award which was the first award ever given to a make-up artist by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Science. He won This award thanks to his ability shown in the film "Cimarron". After that, he  a supervisor at 20th Century-Fox Film corporation.




Walter James Westmore (1906-1973), called Wally made his career being the head of the make-up department at Paramount Studios for 41 years.

    Hamilton Adolph Westmore (1918-1973), known as Bud, started his working path at Paramount and 20th Century-Fox and then he  became a make-up chief at Universal Studios for nearly 24 years.
    The last of the brothers, Frank Westmore (1923-1985) worked  for a very long time at Paramount Pictures.

Their generation didn't finish there. Some members from their generation continued with the same craft. They were make-up artists not only for theatrical make-up but also in therapeutic make-up. They worked with visctims of facial burns, diseases or accidents.
